Why A Yearly Cervical Cancer Check-Up Is A Necessity – Not An Option!
Women’s intimate health is an important and often neglected issue that should be regularly checked. The one medical issue that is preventable is cervical cancer.
If it is caught on time, it can be successfully managed and women can lead a healthy and long life. Going to the OBGYN and doing a yearly checkup is not a necessity, it is a MUST. Early prevention is the core for treating any medical issues, as well as cervical cancer.
So, just a quick reminder, here is everything you need to know and how to deal with cervical cancer.
What is cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer is one of the most common, but also the most preventable cancers among women. It is a cancer of the cells of the cervix. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that is connected to the female V-part. The type of cervical cancer that is the most common is the squamous cell carcinoma that comes from the cells lining the ectocervix and accounts for almost 80% of cervical cancers.
The majority of cervical cancers are usually caused by the HPV infection that is most commonly transmitted through sexual intercourse. The HPV types 16 and 18 are the ones that cause cervical cancers and precancerous lesions.
Who needs to do the cervical check-up?
All the women, no matter if they are sexually active or not, should do regular cervical check-ups. Although there are HPV vaccinations today, the regular check-up is highly recommended and necessary. The check-up can begin right after starting being sexually active, all the way through menopause.
How to prevent cervical cancer?
The best prevention of the appearance of cervical cancer is regular check-ups. They are done in the form of a PAP-test. This test examines the smear taken from the cells in the cervix and reports if there are any precancerous or cancerous lesions. The risk of getting cervical cancer is much lower if there are regular screenings and tests done, that can catch it in the early stage.
Although there might not be any symptoms at first, cervical cancer is very dangerous and might require surgery, chemotherapy, and even radiation. In those cases, the infected and unhealthy tissue is being removed and further spread of different organs is also stopped.
With all of the above said, the regular cervical check-up is not a necessity, it is a must for every woman who takes care of her health and her future.
